Old Fashioned Vinegar Pie

September 4, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

This Old Fashioned Vinegar Pie may sound strange, but it’s a true gem straight from the Depression Era that has earned its place on the kitchen table today!

I feel that I owe somebody an apology. That I need to repent of my sins. That I need to go stand in a corner and wash my mouth out with soap. As I was thumbing through an old church cookbook earlier this week, I stumbled upon this recipe for Vinegar Pie. Knowing good and well that everything else I’ve ever tried from that cookbook has been nothing short of delicious, I quickly scoffed at this recipe and dismissed it. In fact, I’m pretty sure I exclaimed out loud to an empty room. “That sounds terrible!”

Old Fashioned Vinegar Pie - this old time classic was a product of The Great Depression Era, but it's custard like texture and sweet with a hint of tangy flavor profile is the reason it's forever here to stay! #vinegarpie #oldfashionedpie #pie…

Peanut Butter Fudge

September 2, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

This recipe for peanut butter fudge has a special history behind it, and it’s so perfectly rich and delicious, you’ll think you’re biting into a slice of heaven!

Since my oldest daughter has started school, I’m sometimes able to carve a little bit of time into my days to do things that I enjoy doing. One of those things is thumbing through old cookbooks that have been given to me over the years that are filled with tons of recipes from local people – many of which I never knew. I came across a fundraiser-type cookbook that was put together by the local school when my husband was in the 5th grade. Naturally, I turn straight to the dessert section in hopes of stumbling across a gem tucked away amongst the pages that I could do a little taste-testing on.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge Pie

August 30, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

Brace yourselves – pie season is coming! Technically, pie season is all year long in my house. My husband and I love a good cake, but we are pie people through and through. There are a million and one ways to get really fancy with pie recipes, and Pinterest is certainly overflowing with more beautiful magazine-worthy pies than you could shake a stick at. You won’t see me complaining about that one bit, because I’ve been known to pin a beautiful pie (or 800) to my dessert boards. However, my southern soul knows you can never go wrong with the classics, and this Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge Pie is a fool proof way to serve a slice of sweetness any time of the year!

Cranberry Pumpkin Buttermilk Bread

August 20, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

This recipe for cranberry pumpkin buttermilk bread is just the ticket to help you hop from the scorching summer to those fantastic fall vibes!

Have you noticed a common ingredient over the last few recipes that I’ve shared? It always stabs at my soul a little bit when I let food waste away in my refrigerator, and every time I buy a half gallon of buttermilk, I make it my personal mission to use up every drop of it before it turns sour. (I chuckle at that, because buttermilk technically is sour on it’s own, but you get what I mean!)

Our local weather man announced yesterday that we broke a 12 year old record heat index this week , and just yesterday we reached 90 degrees before 9 am. If you’re not careful, this heat can make you go a little crazy!

Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

August 14, 2019 by Laura Tucker 1 Comment

This Old Fashioned Buttermilk Pie is a true southern staple dessert, and every bite tastes just like a sweet Sunday afternoon.

Ever since I can remember, I can recall a buttermilk pie sitting on the dessert table somewhere during a church event. The sweet older ladies in my church make some of the best pies in the world – often made from recipes handed down for generations. Buttermilk pie has a pretty long history in our country, as it was a pie that could easily be made with very inexpensive pantry staples, such as buttermilk and eggs. When fruit was hard to get or out of season, you could always count on a buttermilk pie.

As we’re rounding out the end of summer vacation, the shelves at local stores are beginning to fill with crayons, pencils, backpacks and all sorts of bright and colorful school supplies to help children across the country get ready for another school year to start. Sales flyers in newspapers and magazines are pushing their back-to-school sales and discounts, and soon our social media pages will be filled with children posing with their new gear as they get on the bus to head to their first day of school.3 Back to School Treats to Sweeten the School Year…

These Mini Lemon Poppy Seed Cakes are the perfect pick-me-up treat to share with friends and family – or to enjoy by yourself. I certainly won’t judge!

If you’ve been following along here for a while, this recipe may sound quite a bit familiar to you. One of my more popular recipes is Grandmama’s Lemon Cakes, and I make them all the time. They’re always a highly requested item any time there is a bake sale in the area, and if there’s a holiday, birthday or any other special event in the near future, you can bet you’ll see these tiny little lemon cakes making an appearance.

Sugar Roasted Pecans

July 5, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

Sugar roasted pecans are just like candy, only way better. Hold on to this recipe. It’s a keeper!

Because we live roughly 3 hours from the gulf coast, we make fairly frequent trips down to the beach for quick little getaway vacations. My oldest daughter loves to go because of the waves, my husband loves to go because of the pier, but my favorite part of going to the beach? Well, you’ll probably get a kick out of this one. The sun, surf and sand are all well and good, but when it comes to heading down to the beach, I’ve got my eyes on one prize and one prize only:

Patriotic Marshmallow Pops

July 1, 2019 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

These Patriotic Marshmallow Pops are a quick and easy treat to make and eat to celebrate the Fourth of July or Memorial Day!

With the 4th of July quickly approaching, my daughter has been noticing lots of red, white and blue decor on display at local businesses and has been asking me quite a few questions about why they’re there, what our flag means and why we fly it. I love that she’s beginning to take notice of things like this, and it’s been great seeing the wheels turn in her head when I share tidbits of our beautiful nation’s history with her. Since she’s gradually beginning to understand what freedom is and why we celebrate it, I thought it would be fun to make a quick and easy dessert to kick off our weekend heading into the 4th of July week!
