Finding Beauty in Simplicity with 100% Pure Cosmetics – Review

December 13, 2016 by Laura Tucker 6 Comments

I received complimentary product and compensation in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts expressed within this post are completely my own. I only share things that I truly love! #ad #100percentpure #nodirtybeauty

What if I told you that you could highlight your natural beauty using things found in nature? That you could optimize your beauty routine by ditching the toxins, chemicals, preservatives and artificial colors and replace them with simple, 100% natural and cruelty free ingredients and still feel flawless and beautiful? I wasn’t so sure that I would ever find a makeup that would fit all of my needs that wasn’t filled to the brim with yucky chemicals, but I’ve seen the light on the other side, and it’s positively amazing (and 100% Pure!)

Easy Holiday Gift Idea: DIY Hot Cocoa Gift Basket

December 5, 2016 by Laura Tucker 2 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Dollar General for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

This weekend I got to sneak into “town” and do some special holiday shopping for my friends and family. My husband stayed home with my daughter, so I got to walk around the store completely uninterrupted. No temper tantrums, no little hands reaching for items on the shelves and throwing them on the floor, and no frantically chasing a toddler down the aisles. It was bliss.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may already know that I’m from a very small community in rural Alabama. There’s not much to my little town, just a few gas stations, a sandwich shop and a school. There is, however, a centerpiece in my community that makes surviving out here in the sticks much, much easier. It was also my store of choice on my much needed shopping trip this weekend, where I picked up a few supplies to put together a really fun little DIY project I’m about to share with you. You may be surprised to know that the gem that I’m referring to is my beloved Dollar General store, and I am pumped about all of the sweet holiday items I scored there!

Tips on Enjoying Outdoor Play During the Cooler Months

November 21, 2016 by Laura Tucker 2 Comments

“This post is sponsored by the Voice of Play. All opinions expressed are completely my own. We love to get outside and play, and we want to encourage you to enjoy #YearRoundPlay, too!”

The leaves are falling to the ground, and our sweaters and jackets are (joyfully) starting to make an appearance back into our wardrobes. Autumn is officially here, and we are savoring every sweet minute of it! In our neck of the woods, it’s horribly humid and hot for a large portion of the year, so once the temperature starts to drop, we waste NO time! We grab our coats and head right out the door!

Tips on Enjoying Outdoor Play During the Cooler Months #VoiceOfPlay

And when it comes to outdoor play, we want our little girl to let her imagination run wild and to truly enjoy nature and all it has to offer. After we ate our lunch this past Sunday, we went on a little adventure to see what kind of fun we could find outside the four walls of our house.

If you have any trees in your yard that are dropping their leaves, you’re sitting on a gold mine my friends! My husband grabbed a rake and made a nice little pile of leaves within minutes for our toddler to play in. He’s a keeper, don’tcha think! 😉
Tips on Enjoying Outdoor Play During the Cooler Months #VoiceOfPlay

This was the very first time our kiddo has actually played with leaves. Sure, she’s picked them up to study them a few times, and she’s even learned that they make a funny “crunch” sound when you step on them, but she’s never actually looked at them as a fun way to play. That is, until now! 😉Tips on Enjoying Outdoor Play During the Cooler Months #VoiceOfPlay

We try to make it a point to get some quality outdoor play time several times a week. I believe it’s important to find ways to get kids playing outside ALL year long, and not just during the warmer months. In fact, did you know that encouraging outdoor play is scientifically proven to benefit our children physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively? Plus, there’s no cost to play outside. There’s a whole wide world out there ready to explore, and all it takes is your time! 🙂
Tips on Enjoying Outdoor Play During the Cooler Months #VoiceOfPlay

If you’re looking to get outside with your kiddos during the cooler months, here’s a few tips to help you get moving!:

  • Dress Appropriately
    • Make sure you check the temperature and dress in layers that can easily be removed in case it warms up. Once you get moving and the blood starts pumping in your body, it can get warm quickly!
  • Wear Sunscreen
    • Did you know that your skin can burn during the colder months just as easily as it can during the Summer? Children with fair skin should always have a little sunscreen applied to their face and any other part that may be exposed to sunlight while playing outside.
  • Take Advantage of Local Parks
    • Local parks are a total gem! They’re a great place to spend some quality family time while getting some fresh air and enjoying the outdoors. They’re totally free for you to use, so get out there and have some fun!
  • Use Your Imagination
    • Look for new ways to play outside with your kids, such as creating an obstacle course, going on a scavenger hunt, “gathering” sticks, acorns, rocks, etc. playing in leaves, building a snowman, hanging homemade bird feeders, and so on. The possibilities are endless! The biggest limit to how much fun you have outdoors is your own imagination!

For more ideas on how to get outside and enjoy the outdoors all year round, visit IPEMA’s educational website, Voice of Play. You’ll also find more information on all of the benefits outdoor play can bring to you and your children!

So what are you waiting for, friends? Grab your coat, get outside and enjoy the world around you!

How I Transformed A Closet Into My Office Space + OttLite Review

November 7, 2016 by Laura Tucker 3 Comments

When my husband and I moved into our current home, we knew that we were going to have far less room in our new house than we were accustomed to. We decided to move back to my husbands hometown and stay in his grandparent’s rental property for a few years to save up enough money to build our dream home. While we’re forever grateful for this humble little abode, it’s had it’s share of challenges. For instance, the house is approximately 1100 sq feet, so coming up with places to put our belongings requires us to get really, really creative sometimes. With just 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and no storage space at all, things got tight fast.

3 Ways to Amp Up Your Morning Before You Leave the House

October 24, 2016 by Laura Tucker Leave a Comment

The morning slump. We’ve all fallen victim to it’s lack-luster blah-ness that leaves us feeling unmotivated and uninspired before our feet even hit the floor in the morning. Hopefully it’s not every day what you feel that way, but I’m sure you’ve been there a time or two where you just couldn’t get your motor running in the morning. We’ve all been there.

Even morning people (like myself) can find themselves in a rut early in the day, trying hard to focus on the positives, but too often being consumed by negative thoughts and vibes. I try really hard to be a go-getter and tackle each day with confidence, but sometimes my go-getter attitude gets up and leaves long before I ever step foot out of my front door. Let’s be honest here.. sometimes my morning is just a little too….blasé, if you will.

30 Farmhouse Gifts under $30 on Amazon

If you’ve been following Southern Made Simple for a while, you know that my love for all things “farmhouse” is no secret. This little love affair first started a little over a year ago when I watched HGTV’s show “Fixer Upper” for the very first time. I fell head over heels in love with Joanna Gaines’ creative mind and vision. I was hooked from the start!

Since that time, I’ve made several posts about my very favorite farmhouse finds at my beloved Amazon. (Seriously, I don’t know what I’d do without my free 2-day shipping!) If you need a recap, you can find my posts here.

10 Minute Skillet Nachos

I’m not sure what stars had to align in my life to make me love cooking as much as I now do, but I started taking a major interest in getting creative in the kitchen right after my toddler was born almost a year and a half ago. I’m always flipping to the cooking channels when I get a chance to see what my favorite chefs are up to, and I find myself dragging out all of my old cookbooks from over the years a lot more frequently now.

I’d say it’s just because I love to eat, but truthfully I think it has something to do with the experience. The same satisfaction you may get after you’ve assembled a challenging puzzle or craft project happens for me after I put together a nice and delicious meal for my family. But now that school has started back and my schedule has gotten busier, I find it harder to put together meals on the fly that leave myself and my family feeling satisfied. I long for those recipes I can throw together quickly that will still leave me feeling like a champ in the kitchen.
