A Strong Foundation: Bible Verses for Building a Home
Last week I made a big announcement that we’ve started our home building project! It’s something we’ve been dreaming of since before we got married, and we feel so truly blessed to watch it all finally unfold. At just 26 and 27 years old and first time home owners (builders), we’re trying our hardest to make smart financial decisions for our family, but we also knew that building a home would be a one-time deal for us. This home is our forever home. These are our roots. When we formed our house plans from scratch, we made sure that we had the things we needed, but also things that we really wanted (within reason), too.
We’ve been praying over our home every step of the way. We pray for and seek God’s guidance as we make big decisions regarding our home every single week. Christ is the cornerstone of our faith and our family, and we knew we wanted to honor Him in all things during this build.
So once the framing started going up and the rooms were mapped out, I told my husband that I wanted to write God’s word all throughout our home. I thought it would be neat to find scripture that would tie into each room of the home, and serve as a reminder to us that God’s word never fails and is the infrastructure of our own lives (including our home.) I quickly got to work planning out Bible verses for building a home that we could write in each room, and I’m sharing it with all of you in case you find yourself in the midst of a building project and want to include scriptures within your own walls!

Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. If you’re building a home and have scriptures that you feel fit perfectly in a particular room of the house, I’d love for you to share that below! We’re giving all of the glory and praise to God throughout this life changing project, and we hope that this list of Bible Verses for Building a Home inspires you, fills your home with joy and ultimately brings you closer to Him!
It fills my heart and soul with love and gratitude to read these scriptures that fill your home and heart. Together you two have prayed and your home is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ and happiness. These last words from a wonderful hymn ?❤
We did this with our first home when we remodeled and again with our second home when we built. The inspector said he had never seen anything like it. The intention was not to witness, but it provided the opportunity to do so.
We’ve had so many different workers pass through our home already. I’m not sure if any of the workers have paid any attention to the verses, but my heart is hopeful that it’s touched at least one person!
Thank you for sharing this! We are days away from our groundbreaking and this is now on my to-do list when I see 2x4s going up!
We did something similar for a new building at my work, and I never thought to do this for my home!! Lovely.
Thank you for sharing your Bible Verses for Building a Home. God bless you and your family. It is more than 4 years now. We know to put the Bible verses in the foundation of the house but we never think it can be done in every part of the house. Again. Thank you.
Great ones! Here are a few that we’ve got throughout our house:
For the foyer: Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God! Psalm 84:3; Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. Psalm 91:1-2 (this can also be used in a storm shelter or safe room)
At a back door or out to a garden: Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Jeremiah 29:5
For the foundation: Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Psalm 127:1a; Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Matthew 7:24
Master bedroom: Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. Ecc 4:9-12
For children’s rooms: You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. Proverbs 3:24
Stairwells, especially to 2nd stories (v12 at the bottom of stairs and v13 at the top): As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway. At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.
In a den or children’s playroom: Love one another as I have loved you. John 13:34; Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 1 Peter 3:8; Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Ephesians 4:2; I have no greater joy than to know my children walk in the truth 3 John 4. (or 1:4)
Closets: Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. Ephesians 6:13-18
In a dining room: Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. Psalm 100
In an eat-in/ breakfast nook (this is where most of our laughing happens): We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” Psalm 126:2; He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy. Job 8:21
These are some wonderful verses to add! I’m going to include them in my list if you don’t mind!
This is perfect! My family is planning a blessing party soon with this very purpose in mind. We’re inviting our neighbors, church family and loved ones to join us in blessing each room by writing scripture on the frames and flooring. Thank you so much! Carla McClanahan, Dallas
I was very touched by reading this blog. Setting your foundation is found throughout the Bible and the application on various bible quotes throughout the structure really resonated with me. I’ll keep this in mind for our future house. Your blog site is really helpful. FAITH HOPE LOVE BELIEVE…
Thank you so much for sharing this with me and my family are doing well with these scripture my house is so much better ❤️ May ?? ? God continue to bless you and your family in the name of Jesus Christ amen.
Thank you for sharing!
Wow!!! What an awesome way stamp the Lord throughtout your home! I’m getting a new home built and I can’t wait for my husband and I to do this on this weekend. What perfect timing! Thank you for such a great idea. I will definitely pass this on!
Perfect timing! Our home is under construction and this weekend I planned on writing verses throughout. One thing we did in the beginning was collect verses and/or prayers from friends and family. These were put into a Bible, which we had set in the concrete foundation. There is something special about knowing your home was built…literally…on the Word of God!
Enjoy your home project and thank you for all of the verses!
We did this same thing! We inset two bibles. One in the foundation at the entrance to home, and one under where the master (marriage) bed will be.
This is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. You’re so bold in your faith; I love it! These are definitely some goals to have in life.
WE will be breaking ground for our new home in a few weeks. I am very glad I saw this.
This was an awesome idea! I ran into this article on Pinterest. Thanks for sharing. I will keep this in mind whenever we build our dream home. I’ll have to check out some of your other blog posts.
I love this! I just spent this evening finalizing house plans as we will break ground soon and I am so happy to see your idea! Thank you for sharing!
I’m writing my vision out and was looking for how to build a house on a solid foundation you’ll pulled up. I love the scriptures and added them to the ones I already have. This will be our forever home.
Blessings!
I love all the Bible verses you provided and I will start using them to pray for my dream home.
I am so thankful to have found your post. What a great collection of verses. I am also adding each child’s favorite verse in his bedroom. As well as my husband’s and my favorite verses.
Thank you thank you!! We are just a few weeks from breaking ground. This house will be sewn with God’s Word all over it and will be used to glorify Him!!
Thank you for sharing these! My husband and I are currently planning/dreaming our ‘someday’ home. In the meantime I want to write these on the inside of all the light switch plates at our current apartment!
When I was a child and my parents built our home my mom had bibles laid into the foundation in the doorways … that way every time someone walked in or out of our home they were walking over the word of God . And she also had them on esch corner and in her closet which she used as her prayer room 😉 she became an angel this passed January I miss her dearly but her teachings and her love for God has forever imprinted my soul . We plan on building soon and I will also be putting Godd word in the foundation of my home and on the walls all through it also . Thanks for the scripture ideas . And congrats to everyone building 🙂
What a sweet sweet story. The s inspires us to do something similar this week as the walls are going up in our forever home. My husband and I both lost our spouses suddenly, went through a tough grieving period, and eventually found each other with Gods help. This will be the Home we never shared with someone else.
Thanks am inspired and encouraged. We are about building and thought of putting Bible on the foundation. But was not sure if am right but after reading your post l know l can. God bless u
We didn’t build a new home .But as we remodeied and pulled down walls we had our children write their names and favorite bible verses on the walls and studs. We still laugh and wonder what the people who will find them someday will think.
Love this! We have been in the process of building our barndomenium for two years now (since we began the dirt work). When we first walked this property we stopped and said to each other how it would be such a dream come true to actually be able to purchase this land and build on it. We prayed. God made it possible!!!
When we had the concrete poured I took a nail and etched verses into several places on the edges of the slab. I will be adding scripture written out like you did in our framing and on the slab. I love to see that I’m not alone in wanting to surround and build our home with Jesus in the center.
I was actually thinking of posting on Facebook for all my family and friends to give us one verse to put in our home building and I can put their name by each one. I think that would be a neat idea as well. Happy building!
What an awesome idea. I hope it is okay to copy what you did. We will starting our house this month. I want it to be totally dedicated to the Lord because of all he has brought us through.
Blessings to you in your new home.
Hi Carrie! Of course it is! That’s the reason why I shared this post with the world…so that others would find inspiration in it! Best of luck to you and your family during your build!
Beautiful thanks for sharing will definitely incorporate to our new home. Blessings to you and your family.
We plan to do this with our home. We are just beginning to build. Before we poured the foundation, we tossed two blessed coins of St. Joseph and Padre Pio into the trenches dug for the footings near the front door. God is our foundation.
Hello! I want to do this but I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on where to write the versus when it is not a new home, we are moving in to an existing home. Above door jams? Thresholds?
I love the idea of doing this above door ways. I’ve also seen people write scriptures behind all of the light switch plates and/or electrical outlets when they move into an existing home. If you ever do any remodeling, you can write it underneath tiles, etc.
I have lived in my house for many years. I plan to use these scriptures as l make my house a home and ask the Lord to continue to bless my family.
This is amazing! Our build commenced today in Melbourne, Australia. I have a Inspo Insta account going @muskmanor and really wanted to use the platform to share Gods Goodness as this how is 100% funded by generational Blessings from God. Thanks for putting all I was seeking and believing for in one place. Im now inspired to boldly ask our Site Supervisor if we can write on our frames. Thanks So Much!
That is so incredibly exciting! Best wishes to you and your family as you begin this process! (I’ve followed you in Instagram so I can see how thins progress!)
Thank you, this is just what I was looking for. Our house is framed and roof placed right before Harvey hit Houston. Thank you again ?
Thank you for this wonderful reference point as we are building a home and have just completed framing. I am so excited to have the Lord’s word within the walls of our home, something to remember and think about as we enter and leave each space. I have found a few extra that I really think are great additions to your list.

At 17 my future husband and I began to remodel a home he inherited that had been in his family for generations. During the remodel we found scriptures written through out it and important dates such as weddings and birthdays. It was such a sweet find. We are designing our new home and we are going to do the same. I just loved that idea.
May God bless you and your family.
HI LAURA,
MY HUSBAND & I ARE IN THE PROCESS OF BUILDING & I JUST LOVE THE LORD & HIS POWERFUL WORD! I ALREADY HAVE PRINTED INSPIRATIONS THROUGHOUT OUR CURRENT HOME & WAS TALKING WITH MY FATHER GOD ONE DAY & TOLD HIM I WOULD LIKE TO DO SOMETHING A LIL’ EXTRA IN OUR NEW HOME FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END OF THIS PROCESS. THEREFORE, THE LORD PLACED IN MY HEART TO NOT ONLY PRAY OVER THE ENTIRE PROCESS, BUT STAMP HIS LOVE ALL OVER; FROM THE LAND, FOUNDATION & TO THE LAST NAIL/SCREW TO BE USED. ISN’T HE JUST SO AWESOME! HALLELUJAH!!! SO THANK YOU & THE OTHERS THAT CONTRIBUTED SCRIPTURES ALREADY PLACED IN DECENT & ORDER, THAT OUR HOME WILL BE SET ON THE SOLID FOUNDATION….THE WORD OF GOD.
MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS & KEEP YOU ALL!
That is wonderful news, Teresa! I am so happy for you and your family. I know that you honoring the Lord in your home will be pleasing in His sight. Blessings to you, sweet sister in Christ!
I am so blessed to find this! We are in the middle of building a home and we planned to write verses on the wood this weekend! We have been in the process of compiling verses, but you just brought up many others that I am excited to use! Yay!
You should’ve added these verses too.
1 Corinthians 10:21
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
Ephesians 5:11
Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
But test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.
Hi Dina,
Thank you for those additions! This list that I’ve complied is certainly not an exhaustive list. I know there are a lot of things that I “should” have added, but it would be so difficult for me to find them all myself. I’m so thankful for all of those who have helped and added some along the way!
Let’s not forget about our neighbors. We are moving from a single home to a town-home and our neighbors here are so sad we are leaving. That feels great, not that they are said of course, but to know we are appreciated. I want to do the same at the new place.
Mark 12:31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Romans 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.
We can write the verses on the fence or on both sides of the house walls.
Hi Laura,
I was looking for something else in the web but chance upon your blog. It caught my eyes and I read through (and repeat it with my girls). What you and your family did is so inspiring!! This is a good way to declare His Lordship over our home and to bless everyone who happened to drop by.
I am very blessed after reading this! My husband and I are building our dream home and we just broke ground the day after Christmas! We’ve been praying for God to guide us every step of the way. I’ve been collecting bible verses to write on the foundation and throughout the frame of the home in all of the rooms and doorways also! I was just working on combining my list of scriptures and I stumbled across your post. Thank you so much!! I have a 4 year-old and a 6 month-old and I haven’t had the time to plan this out room by room! You did it for me!! Thank you! Readers also left such beautiful verses in the comments and offered so many ideas like a throwing a blessing party and asking friends and family to provide a list of scriptures for them!! I have a pretty good list also, once I finalize it I will share any verses that are not listed here! God bless you and your family!!
I absolutely love this! I am a newlywed of four months and my husband and I are ministers and will use this for our sermon series and in our home building process metaphorically and practically! Thank you for letting God use you. You have tremendously blessed my soul!
I love love love this! We will be breaking ground in a couple of months on our forever home–I’m never moving again! I have incorporated a sun porch in my house for my times with the Lord in the mornings over bible readings that I am so excited about. But I love all these ideas! I’m going to have each member of my family and my bible study group give me a bible passage to write on our walls. I’ve been praying for the process all along but I didn’t think to write scriptures on the walls. One never knows who will read it and how God will work in their life! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing this! We are in the process of building and the walls are framed. I am going to do be busy this weekend writing away! I am excited about having the kids help us as well. Thank you again for sharing!
This is by far the most extensive list I have found. Thank you that each of us will benefit from you being so thorough!
Blessings to your family’s new home!!
Laura, This was so inspirational and such a blessing to see a young couple this committed to the Lord. God is going to greatly use you and your husband and your child is blessed to have you. To God be the glory.
Oh my goodness, I’m building my first home soon and wanted scriptures to meditate on during this process. I love the idea of writing scriptures in the home…I’m excited about doing this!! That’s so wonderful, thank you for sharing this!
Oh thankyou so much.. we’ve shifted to our own new flat and I wanted to decorate the entire house with bible verses.. you really really really made it easier for me..
Those verses are great to be written on the walls..
Thankyou
God bless you.
Thank you for sharing this. I am having a house built in a new subdivision and recently discovered one of the workers drew a lewd picture on the plywood in the master bedroom. Another place had a heart with a word written in Spanish. I’m going to go back and write Scripture in English and Spanish. One never knows what be beneath an exterior.
Hi I’m from South Africa, its wonderful to connect with people from different countries. i can truly say with great confidence that the holy spirit lead me to your blog, my husband and I have just bought a piece of vacant land after 10 years of having this vision for our home, we are busy with building plans. I happened to be browsing for scriptures and came across your webpage. Thank you for making all these verses available for others. I am definitely going to be making use of them.
We are breaking ground shortly on a new home and plan to write scriptures on framing throughout the house. We did this on another home and were surprised to learn that neighbors walked through the home while it was under construction and saw the scriptures! That, obviously, wasn’t our intent, but the Lord intended for our home to be a witness, even before we moved in. 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing your blog.
I have been thinking about scriptures for our new home and this is perfect. Thank you for sharing. I am going to share these with my husband.
I love all things Southern too!!! Can’t wait to see all of your updates.
I’m actually doing something very similar. my wife and I are building our forever house. everyday I take pictures of the progress and I find a scripture to go along with the progrees, that’s how I found this page. I am making a photo album.
hope everything worked out and God bless.
Thanks for sharing these! We got together with friends yesterday and they suggested we do this. I was so happy to read your post! The slab has just been poured in our new home and I am so excited about doing this with my family soon. So grateful for your family.. God’s peace and blessings be yours always.

I would absolutely love to build a house and have some land, what prayers can I pray for this? We live in an area where the land is really expensive and no buildings are passed for building your own house. We cannot move because my husband will not leave his parents and our work is here.
I absolutely loved reading this post.
We had our ground breaking ceremony this morning and I happened to find your site before we left! Thank you for sharing what you all did in the blessing of your new home. We also had our build team with us, along with the project manager so seemed so touched with our blessing, that he wanted to say a few blessings oh his own, and said prayers for the entire BUILD team from the framing to the wiring people! In addition to the scriptures I recited, I also found this poem from John Pierpont, “On This Stone Now Laid with Prayer”
On this stone now laid with prayer
Let Thy church rise, strong and fair;
Ever, Lord, Thy name be known
Where we lay this cornerstone.
Let Thy holy Child who came
Man from error to reclaim
And for sinners to atone,
Bless, with Thee, this cornerstone.
May Thy Spirit here give rest
To the heart by sin oppressed,
And the seeds of truth be sow,
Where we lay this cornerstone.
Open wide, O God, Thy door
For the outcast and the poor,
Who can call no house their own,
Where we lay this cornerstone.
By wise master builders squared,
Here be living stones prepared
For the temple near Thy throne,
Jesus Christ, our cornerstone.
My blessings to you and your families, all of you who are building your foundation on solid rock, Jesus Christ!
Thank you for sharing. We are building a home too and I was searching for foundational prayer ideas when I saw this. It is beautiful and I will start writing the scriptures to put.
I LOVE THIS! we just started the beginning of our home building process and i continue to envision God being the roots and foundation of our new, forever home for our family. this is such a beautiful idea that i hope to do in our home too!
I’m so grateful . for you sharing, the foundation is poured. We will be writing scriptures all throughout our new home.
I love all of these scriptures and ideas. I am a builder in Nashville and the 2 houses Ive built thus far that I’ve written scripture on a 2×4 in every room. I love praying over every part of the house believing that whoever moves in will feel the Glory of God, His presence, and guidance, even if they don’t have an intimate relationship with him yet. The first house I sold last year was to an American couple with a daughter who were missionaries in Greece for several years. How awesome was that! So fun watching God work things out like that.
I just stumbled across this post and LOVE it!! We moved into our home as new construction, though we did not build it. I have been writing (and inviting friend and family to write) scripture on the cement basement floor for years. We are finally ready to finish our basement and I hate to cover them up! I am searching for a way to record them on some type of wall art (I have recorded all of the verses that were written). Have you done anything like that? I think it is so special that you captured pictures of the verses being written-what an amazing memory and testament to pass on to your children!
Hebrews 12:28-29 Therefore since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be filled with gratitude, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. For our God is a consuming fire.
Just did this on our fireplace! Thank you for the inspiration.
This is the most beautiful thing. My husband and I have three little girls and our dream is to be able to build our forever home. We have been praying for our financial situation and for us to be able to build our dream home. I trust in God and know that everything will work out how it’s supposed to. If one day we would be able to build our dream home, I hope it’s ok we use these scriptures throughout our home as well. Thank you for such a great idea. I have been looking for awhile things I would add one day to our forever home, and have not seen anything like this. I just love this!
Thank you, Michelle! That really touched my heart. Our God is so faithful. I know he will bless your home greatly!
We are currently building our final home and, though we have built homes previously, we did not do this in any of them. This time I felt His breeze and it lead me to your site. Thank you for helping Him bless our last home before we join Him.
Blessings to you and your family ….. always.
That touches me soul, Kathy. I am so happy to hear of you incorporating His word into your final build. God bless you and your new home!
Thank you for this article! Absolutely love it as I’m doing this to our fixer upper home. I did notice there’s a typo, for the girls room, She is clothed….. is actually proverbs 31:25, not 21:25. ?
Hi Hope,
Thank you SO much for catching that for me!
I so enjoyed this post and all the replies! I’ll be taking my Sharpie down to our job site this weekend to write God’s Wors on the framing throughout. We have been blessed through this whole process that started in March when we decided to list our home and make a move. We never expected to be building, but God is great!
We are building a new fellowship hall at our church. How do we place a Bible in foundation,? In the dirt? Please send instructions.. thanks and God Bless you.
If you’re actually putting a physical Bible into the foundation, I would recommend storing it in a large PVC pipe tube with end caps on it. It would need to be buried deep enough that it would not cause any structural issues with the building. Talking with a building contractor about this beforehand would be best. Best of luck to you and your church, and congratulations on the new fellowship hall!
Broke ground on our forever home just a few days ago and cant wait to write verses on the studs and in the foundation thank you for your inspiration
We are in the process of starting our build. We placed two bibles in the foundation framing today. We did so, as we wanted to build our foundation on the word of God. I came online tonight to begin pulling together verses for the framing of my home and found your page. These are awesome, as are the additional suggested in comments. I’m going to print so I have a great start. Thank you for doing this!
I love the idea of writing verses in your house while it is still under construction. I shall share this idea to my friend who is now to start in building their house. God bless!
Thank you for this very profound blog. It has changed my life.
I will make frames with scriptures for each area of my house.
Thanks for inspiring this.
I was surfing to find scriptures on my first podcast episode Foundation.
I just started The Ecclesia Relationship and Marriage podcast on anchor.fm
I would be glad to connect with you to share words of wisdom on one of our episodes in the nearest future.
