I shared this on my personal Facebook page recently, and many people were very intrigued with what ThredUp is and how to score awesome deals on clothing like I did in this video. I recently wrote a blog post that gives you the skinny on this awesome company, and I even shared how YOU can snag $20 to shop with for free! You can read more about that here: –> 5 Reasons Why ThredUp is Awesome + $20 Credit for Readers
In this particular unboxing, I scored a good bit of smocked clothing for my daughter. This piqued a lot of interest, so I wanted to show you how I search and find exactly what I’m looking for. You may be asking yourself why in the world anyone would care about smocked clothing. What’s so special about it?
You’re not alone in your wondering, friends. I really hate to sound this cliche, but I think it’s just a Southern thing. It really is. It’s been around forever, and it’s not going away any time soon. It’s often hand made, which makes it really desirable. Most bigger brands today are mass produced, but they’re still considered fine clothing because of the time put into making the clothing. They just don’t seem to ever go out of style, either. I have pictures of myself as a baby and toddler wearing smocked clothing 25 years ago that I would gladly allow my daughter to wear today. They also hold their resale value like nobody’s business, which I love.
In fact, she has a few pieces in her closet that were mine as a child. She wore this little outfit to church just a few months ago:
I’m rambling. I apologize! I tend to do that when I really love something, and I do love smocked stuff so much. It’s so cute! Let’s take a look at what came in my polka dot box, and then I’ll share with you how you can start your search for your favorite brands of clothing, but especially smocked clothing in particular. It can be harder to find, so take notes!
ThredUp Unboxing – Smocked Clothing Haul:
You may have heard me mention the “my personal shops” tool that you can utilize on ThredUp. This has been a great way to save your favorite brands and have them all appear on one page so you’re not searching one brand at a time. HOWEVER! You currently cannot create any of your own personal shops because ThredUp has been busy under-wraps revamping the personal shop tool. I have no idea what this means or how it’ll turn out, but I’m confident it’s going to be awesome! I’ll be sure to post an update as soon as they release it.
In the mean time, I’ve compiled a list of every single brand I have saved in my smocked personal shop on ThredUp. You’re going to want to hold on to this. Print it, pin it, take a picture on your cellphone, put it on your fridge, tape it to your forehead, or just pick and choose from it. Whatever you want to do with it, do it! When ThredUp unveils their new personal shops, you’re going to want it. OR you could go ahead and try searching a few of the brands one at a time and see if you can find some treasures. I’ll highlight some of the more frequently featured brands. This is also a great list to familiarize yourself with when second hand shopping or shopping online for smocked items. This is not an exhaustive list of every smocked clothing brand there ever was, but it’s probably close 🙂
Here are the brands I have saved in my personal shops list. The majority of these brands are smocked clothing, but there are a few that feature appliqued items or just really stinkin’ adorable clothing (in my personal opinion). Most of these companies make boy clothing, too. I don’t want you lovely boy shoppers to feel left out! Again, I’m highlighting some of the more frequently seen brands on ThredUp:
Florence Eiseman Kissy Kissy Rare Editions Silly Goose Petit Ami Carriage Boutiques The Bailey Boys Funtasia! Too… Sweet Angela By Rosalina Banana Split Amanda Remembered Le’ Za Me Petit Pomme Small Plantation Candyland The Plantation Shop Ma Petite Amie Shrimp & Grits Kids |

Note: I’ve found the prices on ThredUp to be very good, and usually lower than what I’ve seen at consignment stores for these same brands. When shopping on ThredUp, you may not always find the exact size you’re looking for in a particular smocked outfit. Remember, ThredUp buys and sells gently used clothing from people like you and me. They do not purchase clothing in mass quantities like stores we typically shop at. Basically, what you see is what they have, and when it’s gone it’s gone. Since smocked clothing is harder to come by on this site, consider buying ahead in bigger sizes if you feel that the price is right. Remember, smocked stuff just doesn’t go out of style!

Hi Laura! I also recently joined ThredUp and love it! Unfortunately, the $20 referral link didn’t work for me. Maybe it is old? Not really sure, but just wondering if there is anything that we could do about it. Love your blog!

Hi Grace! Thank you so much for your kind words about Southern Made Simple! Since creating this post, ThredUp bumped the referral rate down from $20 to $10. It should have appeared on the checkout page once you add items to your cart. Do you mind me asking what email address you used to sign up with? I’ll check to see if it appears on my referral list. Also – I have had a good experience every time I’ve had to contact ThredUp customer support. Maybe try checking there, because if you’re a brand new customer you should definitely receive that credit! 🙂
