Aside from being able to take trips down to the beach or finding a pool to splash in, sometimes I think there aren’t too many redeeming qualities to the heat and humidity we experience here in south Alabama. The hot, sticky air that hits you in the face when you open the door to step outside often feels like it sucks the wind right out of you, and it’s the perfect kind of weather for mosquitoes to come out and play. Just when I start to turn into a grump about the heat, I smell the aroma of the grill that my husband just fired up and I’m quickly reminded of one of the biggest reasons that I really do love the summertime!
If you ask me, there’s just nothing quite like crunching into a grilled vegetable or a brat that’s been cooking over an open flame on the grill. I’m not sure what kind of magic my husband uses when he’s tending the grill, but it always has a way of amplifying the flavors of the food that makes my mouth water. The shelves at the grocery store are overflowing with delicious summertime veggies, and my favorite way to prepare them it to slice, dice and put on a skewer!
Earlier this week I stopped by Publix to pick up a few of my favorite grilling essentials to kick off our weekend the right way. In addition to scoring the freshest produce around, I also found a few items that are part of the Publix Summer Grilling Savings Event happening right now! I stocked up on Greenfield Smoked Bratwurst Sausage, Arnold® Buns and a package of Dove® Sorbet Bars to enjoy as a cool treat for dessert. Also included in the event are select brands of hot dogs, drinks, cheeses, desserts, paper products and more!
Making kabobs is one of the best and easiest ways to prepare fresh veggies, and there’s really no wrong way to do it! Kabobs are easy to personalize to your liking, and all you have to do is pop them on the grill and turn them every now and then. Easy peasy!
Once the kabobs come off the grill, you can enjoy them right off of the skewer, transfer them onto a plate, or you can serve them open face on a bun for something a little unexpected! Serving them this way quickly became my favorite way to eat them. Nothing says summer like a grilled brat on a bun, but why not serve it up a little differently every now and then? You can add your favorite condiments on top if you please, or just let the buttery juices from the kabobs soak right into the bun to make them extra tasty!
Here’s a full recipe on how we cooked up our kabobs on the grill. We always make a quick little butter sauce to baste the meat and veggies with, and you can use whatever seasonings you like in the sauce for added flavor!

While doing my shopping at Publix, I was thrilled to see a few frozen desserts as part of the Publix Summer Grilling Event. I’ve had my eye on trying these Dove Raspberry Sorbet bars for a while, and I gladly picked up a few boxes to stock in my freezer for the summer. They were the perfect special treat to cool us down in this heat, and my little girl was a huge fan of them!
