When I chose my “word” for 2020, I had no idea that I’d be receiving my myopic macular degeneration diagnoses two weeks later. Looking at it now, it seems so fitting that I chose “wellness” as my word. Now more than ever, wellness is a top priority for me and my overall health. I’ve shared before how kale and carrots are the go-to veggies for eye health, but as I dug deeper into this, one thing became very clear to me: If you’re not eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, you’re not doing your overall body any real favors. I can eat all the carrots and kale in the world, but if I lose focus on nourishing my body with other veggies and fruit, I’m missing out on crucial nutrients the rest of my body needs.
That’s where Misfits Market came in to bring a little bit of sunshine during a rainy season of my life. Misfits Market is a subscription service that delivers organic produce straight to your door for a fraction of what you’d pay in the supermarket. Here’s the kicker: The produce is (supposedly) oddly shaped and not-so pretty. Basically, Misfits Market takes the produce that was deemed “unfit” for the shelves in the supermarket because they’re too big, too small, or just not as aesthetically pleasing as the others from the bunch.
And wouldn’t you know it – everything I received in my box didn’t seem odd at all! I’m not sure why my produce didn’t make the cut at the supermarket, but I sure am glad I got it! Here’s a breakdown of everything I received in my first box:
3 Opal Apples, 2 Large Lemons, 1 Butternut Squash, 3 Minneolas, 1 Head Iceburg Lettuce, 1 Bundle Green Beans, 4 small Gold Potatoes, Broccoli, 1 Small Grapefruit, 2 Large Red Onions, Mini Pepper Medley, 1 Bunch Celery
It’s a surprise as to what you’ll receive in each box, but they are beginning to roll out a selection process in select areas, and that will hopefully soon be available to everyone. I personally LOVE that it’s a surprise, because it allows me to try new things and incorporate new-to-me foods into my diet. Plus, after you place your first order with Misfits Market, you’re able to choose “add-on” items for an additional charge. They even have a “what’s in your box” tab on their website featuring items they are currently sourcing to give you an idea of some of the things you may receive in your box. And as if they weren’t awesome enough, they have an active blog that features recipe ideas using the items you receive in your box. I love that!
Let’s talk pricing:
Signing up for Misfits Market is completely free. You can schedule out your subscriptions to be weekly or every other week. You can cancel or pause your subscriptions at any time – no charge. I love this no pressure setup, because some weeks I just don’t need as much produce! You also can select which day of the week you prefer to receive your box.
There are two box types to choose from: The Mischief and The Madness.
The Mischief Box – This is the box I chose. It is the smaller box of the two options and is meant to provide enough produce for 2-3 people. It packs around 10-13 lbs of organic mixed produce and is priced at $22.00 + $4.50 shipping.
The Madness Box – This box is suitable for larger families or for those with plant based diets. It packs around 18-22 lbs of organic mixed produce and is priced at $35.00 + $4.50 shipping.

After making my first purchase and using a 25% off discount code myself, my total including shipping came out to $21.00. Is this a stellar price for fresh organic produce? I’m not sure. I think it’s a good price, but if I lived right next to a Whole Foods or other specialty supermarket, maybe not. But here’s why I’m sold and will keep purchasing this every other week: I live an hour away from the nearest store that sells organic produce. I didn’t have to leave my house to get it. I get to try new things and I get to fuel my body with a rainbow of goodness. The element of surprise as to what’s in my next box keeps me excited and entertained. It’s a total win with me, and I look forward to seeing what comes my way next!
If you’re on Instagram, you can follow along and watch my Insta-stories. As each box comes in, I document what I received there. It’s a lot of fun, and will give you an idea of what to expect! And while you’re over there, follow Misfits Market to see what’s new!
