May is officially here! Can you believe how fast the year is flying by? This month holds a ton of exciting things for myself and my family. We’re just a few days away from our daughter’s 1st birthday, and I’ve been flooded with emotions and memories of watching her grow and learn SO many new things. Even though she’s learned a ton during her first year, I’ve definitely learned quite a bit myself.
This time last year, I was working full time outside of the home. I had a strict morning routine and made it a point to really take care of myself during that time. Once my daughter was born, my previous routine went right out the door faster than a speeding bullet. I put my needs on the back burner because I really wanted to rock this whole “mom” gig.
It wasn’t long before I started feeling a little down on myself. After some deep digging and a little soul searching, I realized it’s because I stopped taking care of myself. And because I stopped doing that, I was doing my daughter a huge disservice. She needs her mommy to be happy and healthy. She needs me to be my best self at all times so that I can be the best that I can be for her!
So I kicked my hiney into high gear and started making a plan for myself. I decided to start doing 5 very important things each morning that will allow me to boldly put my best foot forward and be my very best self. After all, I have a little girl watching my every move. I want to show her how to be bold, brave and the very best she can be!
If you’re looking to put a little pep into your step and spruce up your morning routine, you may want to take some notes here!
1. Add a Bold Statement Piece to your Wardrobe:
Whether you’re working inside or outside of the home, consider making it a point to put on a little something extra special each day. When I made the transition from working full time outside of the home to staying at home, I nearly abandoned my nicer clothing and very quickly fell into the “yoga pants and messy bun” slump. I’m not knocking the yoga pants, but I always feel so much better and way more productive when I put on something cute – even if I have nowhere to go!
You can add a little bit of “bold” to your wardrobe by choosing a statement necklace or other piece of jewelry, choosing a lip color that really pops, or by adding a lightweight scarf to your outfit. There’s so many possibilities! However you choose to do it, make sure you give yourself a big thumbs up in the mirror because you’re definitely going to rock it!
2. Rock on with a Positive Attitude
While you’re getting ready in the morning, why not crank up some tunes that will really get your “good vibes only” juices flowing! I think music is an international love language that has the ability to bring out a smile in people even on their worst days. Have you ever heard a song that you just couldn’t help but sing a long and dance to? Maybe you know a song that will always put you in a great mood?
I believe it’s so important to try to focus on having a positive attitude. Attitudes can certainly be contagious, and you want to make sure yours is worth catching!
I’ve put together a playlist of 20 rockin’ songs that I love to listen to in the mornings while I’m getting ready for the day. They each have a way of making me sing and dance around like no one is watching, and that tends to really set the tone for the rest of my day. Music can make anyone happy!
3. Fuel Your Body with a Great Breakfast
You’ve heard it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it’s absolutely true! Instead of reaching for something sugary or caving and picking up a greasy sack of regret from the drive thru, do yourself a favor and fuel up with something delicious and nutritious!
Grab some fresh fruit, have a small bowl of Greek yogurt, or have a warm and fluffy muffin packed with nutrients! I really love to make banana muffins at the beginning of the week and munch on them all week long. You can sweeten them without sugar by using applesauce and add in lots of protein with quinoa, chia or flax seeds.
I love to add a few chocolate chips to mine to add a little something extra sweet. Plus, I just can’t resist sometimes! Chocolate is a great little pick me up to indulge in every once in a while. 😉 When you eat a healthy breakfast, you’re making a great step in starting your day out right. Only put the best into your body because you deserve the very best!
4. Take Care of your Health
As I mentioned earlier, I realize that in order to be the mom my daughter needs me to be, I need to make sure that I’m taking care of myself emotionally AND physically. I want to make sure to live a healthy and active lifestyle so that I have a shot at good health. Good health tends to lead to a long life, and I really want to be here as long as I can for her. I’ve realized that there are numerous ways that I can make good, healthy decisions in the morning.
For starters, you can do 10 minutes of light exercise of stretching to tone your muscles and get your heart rate going before you get in the shower. Your heart is a muscle, too, so make it strong! Another way to get your health in check is to meet with your doctor and discuss whether or not taking a multi-vitamin might be a good option for you. It’s common to not receive all of the nutrients your body needs from your daily diet (especially if you’re not eating right), so this is where a multi-vitamin may be an excellent choice.
This one may sound a bit silly to some, but I also recommend wearing a light sunscreen or a makeup with an SPF in it to protect your skin. Once you have sun damage on your skin, it is usually impossible to reverse the effects from it. You only have one skin, so it’s a good idea to take care of it!

Sharing an encouraging word with someone else has the power to transform their day into something extraordinary, so just think about what it can do for you when you use those words when talking to and about yourself!
